Payroll Services in the Vanguard Directory
Payroll services calculate wages, withhold and deposit taxes, file quarterly and year-end returns, issue W-2s and 1099s, pay employees by direct deposit, and track time off and benefits deductions. Owners land on this page with their first hire, after a penalty notice for a late deposit, when a bookkeeper has been doing payroll in a spreadsheet, or when staff in more than one state made the filings too complicated to do by hand.
Payroll providers are not licensed as such, but the ones that hold client tax deposits should be able to show they are registered as a reporting agent with the tax authorities and bonded; ask. Ask what happens if a filing is late because of their error and whether they cover the penalty, how new hires and terminations are entered, whether workers’ compensation and retirement contributions are integrated, and how you get your data out if you leave. Pricing is normally a base fee per month plus a charge per employee per pay run. For the rest of the books, see bookkeepers, and for hiring policy and compliance questions, human resources consultants.
Each payroll provider here submitted its own listing, and a person checked it before it went live. If you run payroll for other businesses, apply to get listed — free, a few minutes.
