Daycares in the Vanguard Directory

Daycares care for children while parents work: infant rooms, toddler and preschool-age groups, before- and after-school programs, and sometimes evening, weekend or drop-in care. They range from a licensed home with a handful of children to a large center with separate classrooms by age and a kitchen that serves meals. Parents come to this page returning to work after a baby, moving to a new area, or leaving a provider that stopped working out.

Daycares are licensed by a state agency in nearly every case, with public inspection records and sometimes a quality rating, so look up the license and the recent inspection history before touring. Ask about staff-to-child ratios in your child’s age group, staff turnover and training, the sick-child and medication policies, nap and feeding routines, how they communicate with parents during the day, and whether you can drop in unannounced. Ask what the weekly or monthly rate covers, whether you pay for holidays and your own vacations, and how long the waitlist is. Many centers run a curriculum like preschools do for older children; for help at home instead, see in-home care agencies.
