Mixing and mastering are the final stages before a song is released. Mixing balances the recorded tracks — levels, EQ, compression, effects and stereo placement — into a finished song. Mastering then prepares that mix for release, setting loudness and tone so it holds up on streaming services, radio and earbuds, and keeping an album consistent from track to track.

Ask to hear before-and-after examples in your genre, and send a reference track so the engineer knows the sound you are after. Confirm how many revisions are included and how they want files delivered: individual stems exported from the same start point, without effects you do not want baked in. Ask whether mastering includes versions for different uses, such as streaming and vinyl, and whether you will receive instrumental and clean versions.
