Answer engine optimization for small businesses: what Google actually asks for

October 9, 2026 · Vanguard Directory

Answer engine optimization, often shortened to AEO, is the marketing industry's name for getting a business cited when someone asks a question and receives an AI-generated answer instead of a plain list of links. For a small service business, the practical version of the question is simple: when someone asks Google why their water heater is leaking, or who repairs foundations nearby, will your website be one of the sources?

There is a lot of advice on this subject, and some of it sells new tools and file formats. This guide sticks to what Google itself has published about the AI features in Google Search.

Google says there is no separate checklist

Google's Search Central page on AI features and your website is unusually direct. It says standard SEO practices remain relevant for AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, that there are no additional requirements to appear in them, and that no other special optimizations are necessary.

On the technical side, a page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google says there are no additional technical requirements, and also that meeting every requirement does not mean Google will crawl, index or serve a page.

Google also states that you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in these features, and that there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add. If someone is selling a special AI file as the key to being cited, that sentence is worth reading twice.

The fundamentals Google lists

The same page lists SEO fundamentals that continue to be worthwhile. In plain terms: allow crawling in robots.txt and make sure your hosting or content delivery setup does not block it; make content easy to find through internal links; provide a good page experience; put important content in text rather than only in images; support text with good images and video where they help; make sure any structured data matches the visible text on the page; and keep your Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date.

That last item is easy to overlook. Google puts Business Profile accuracy in the same list as on-site work, so for a local business the hours, service area, categories and phone number on the profile are part of the job, not a separate project.

Write pages that answer the question fully

Google's guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content asks site owners to judge their pages with a set of questions. Will someone leave feeling they have learned enough to achieve their goal? Does the content provide original information or analysis, rather than mainly summarizing what others say? Does it present information in a way that makes you want to trust it, with clear sourcing, evidence of the expertise involved and background about who is behind it? Google also lists a warning sign: content that leaves readers feeling they need to search again to get better information elsewhere.

For a service business, that translates into practical pages. A page about water heater replacement can explain the signs a unit is failing, what affects the choice between repair and replacement, what the visit involves, which areas you serve and how to book. Each of those is a question real customers ask, and a page that answers them in plain language serves the person reading it, which is who Google's questions are written for.

Write about what you actually know. Google asks who created the content, how and why, and says the why should be to help people. Your own experience, the questions customers ask on the phone and the problems you find on jobs are the kind of original information Google's questions ask about.

Measure it where Google reports it

Google says traffic from AI features is included in the Performance report in Search Console, under the Web search type, together with the rest of your search traffic. Google also notes that AI Overviews appear only when its systems judge them to add something beyond classic Search, and often do not trigger at all, so not every query will produce one.

Verify your site in Search Console if you have not already, watch the queries that bring people in, and track what those visitors do next in your analytics, especially calls and form submissions.

Accuracy is part of the work

AI features link to pages as supporting sources, so outdated details on those pages are a liability. If your site still lists a city you no longer serve, old hours or a retired phone number, fix it. Accuracy matters to the customer reading the page whether or not an AI feature ever links to it.

Vanguard Digital Marketing, a Texas agency that lists search engine optimization among its core services, describes SEO on its directory listing as a long-term strategy to boost organic visibility. That framing suits AEO as well. Google does not describe a shortcut. It describes clear, accurate and useful pages that it can crawl, index and show.
